I think you're doing it wrong. I believe they reward you also for having meeples in the building of their colour. Also, you are only allowed one meeple on each card.

Of course you're right and we've been playing them wrong! I stand corrected, that's what happens when you read the rules on Monday and play next Sunday ;) This changes everything of course, thanks!

PS.What would I do without BGG? :shake:

Even the original base game of Troyes is cheaper on online retailers such as coolstuffinc. I would like to get this expansion but it's so expensive for the materials in it.

Very much agree, it is very expensive for the few contents.
I guess it's to guarantee some sort of return to the designers/publishers.
I purchased it, such a great game :)

I can tell you that it's not for the designers
The price in Belgium/France is around 20-25 €, compared to Troyes which is about 35-40 €.

Funagain has Troyes for $44 and Ladies for $36. So the expansion is about %80 the cost of the original, FWIW.

The English version by Z-MAN is about 25% more expensive than the German version, and costs almost as much as the base game, at least here in Poland (German edition - 75% of the base's price and English edition - 92% of the base's price). On e-bay you can find Troyes for 34-45$ and the Ladies for 36-38$, so you can get the base game cheaper than the expansion!

CoolStuff just has a really good price on the base game: $30. I am guessing many payed more for the base game than that.

The expansion seems consistently priced across online stores.

For those of you that have played the game, did you find the other additions increase the difficulty of the game? If so, the purple dice could have been added to alleviate that added difficulty. If not, I tend to agree they are unnecessary. Fortunately, they can easily be left out.

The addition of the the guard meeples progressing on the rampart is an additional area to spend pips, so providing all players with an extra die may compensate for that.

I'd be interested in hearing from folks who have used the rampart without the purple die to hear how much it gets used.

IMO the more players, the more useful ramparts are. If you won't manage to put a tradesman on a good card, you can try using actions outside the city. The rampart doesn't get used too often in my playing group (either with or without purple dice), however it's a good sink for 1s or 2s when you can't place a citizen in the buildings. Generally, if you miss an opportunity to earn points from the cards or the cathedral, you can catch your opponents up with level IV outdoor activities; if you're the 3rd player to put a tradesman on the Merchant, you'll better use level I outdoor activity (if you get the money making one); and level II activities are perfect for a player who has least dice.

In a 2P game they are rarely used, especially without the purple die. You can't win by concentrating on the ramparts and there are always much more effective ways to score.

I have a question about outdoor activity IVa (the first described in the rulebook). The description says you get 2 additional VPs when placing at least one cube on an Event card. I'm not sure abot how to interpret ADDITIONAL POINTS here - without an outdoor activity you score for an Event card only if you counter it completely. So with outdoor activity IVa, you:

a) get 2 additional VPs only when scoring for this event card (the moment you place the last cube)?
Or
b) you score each time you put a cube on it (and obtain 0 normal VPs and 2 additional VPs)?

I think b) is the correct answer, but we are not sure.

Thanks in advance.

I am not confident it's re-triggered every turn -- is there an FAQ or how do others play it?

It isn't triggered every turn. It's only triggered once, when it first come s up.

Jaroslaw's method may be a variant - it isn't clear from his post. Anyway.

Thread: The Ladies of Troyes:: Strategy:: Ramparts useful in 2 player games?

I have played with expansión two times (I only play with my wife) and the ramparts have not been used at all. It seems to me that it is much easier and better to used a group of dice in another área of the board. By using only one die(for ramparts) you are giving your opponent the chance to get a big group of dice. In 2p there is generally less deniers flowing (more wages to pay)

I can see that in a 3 or 4 player game where you have less dice per person it is a great way to use 1 die on the ramparts, specially a low result die (and use deniers(which are generally more abundant in 3/4player games) to use the max pips).

I guess I dont see a use for them in 2 player. Do most people (who play 2p) feel the same?? And if so, is there a way (variant) to make them attractive in 2p?

Yes. I share your view. We hardly use them in a 2P game. In 3-4P game the ramparts are used more if we include purple dice.

The reason may be, that in a 2P game there's always a better way to use a spare die. Plus you have to meet requirements of 2 characters (4 if you guess what your opponent holds). Even if you add purple dice to a 2P game, the guards on the ramparts stand still most of the time.

I think it depends much on which ramparts are in the game and if they make a combo with cards - if you can make a good combination then the ramparts will be used, but there must be some incentive.
Although I admit that it's difficult to get to the fourth rampart in 2-player game as there are less rounds to play.

edit: mistake

I´ll try to use heavily the ramparts in my next 2player game to see how I do. (Although I always think there is a better use for the dice).

What about doubling the value of the die for rampart movement in 2p? Would that help make them more useful in 2p?

I have a different question about Master Builder. Do you spend the white dice to use Master Builder, and then spend another one or more white dice to place the cubes on the cathedral?

I think probably so, but I just want to make sure.
