We ahve played the expansion only, but there were very few attempts to move our guards along the ramparts. There was a shared belief that too many pips were needed relative to the rewards that could be derived. Each time I looked at it, I could find something (placing worker on building, cathederal, fighting events) that seemed like a better return on the die invested.

Because the purple die was in play, the game was a bit easier and our scores higher, but really the guards were non-factors.

We even discussed implementing some penalty (e.g., -2 influence) per turn one did NOT advance their guard at all.

What were we missing?

Don't forget the power of the outdoor activities! If you move your guard on the ramparts, you must adapt your way to play depending on powers obtained. This can be very painful. Basically if others let them. But the ramparts are not required to win. This is a new option: you have to choose it or not! But now, I often prefer to win with it ;)
