It opens the game up a tiny bit and gives you more options. For people that don’t like the sometimes unforgiving nature of the game, it can make it a little more fun and raise scores slightly. It won’t reduce players buying dice much; usually players are trying to save that die for last and use everyone else’s dice first. If you add the ramparts expansion, which my group did last night for the first time, the game feels almost identical to before in terms of how much you can do with your dice. Since the ramparts can use up a die or two per turn (depending on how hard you go after them), having the extra purple die is a wash in spending power. But even with that in mind, having an extra die to start your turn gives you more potential plays out of the gate.
Overall, I like it.
